The century old Shailabala Women’s College on Thursday added a feather to its cap by becoming the first government college in the state to have a hostel exclusively for disabled students. The two storey hostel, which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.60 crore, was inaugurated by state higher education minister Pradeep Panigrahi on Thursday. The hostel has been built keeping in mind the needs of disabled students. It is completely barrier-free and equipped with facilities like ramps and lifts. The staircase, toilets and corridors have been designed in such a way the visually impaired students can use it easily. The hostel can accommodate 100 students.
The historic college, which was set up in 1913, attracts many disabled girl students from across the state. But they often face problem in living in the overcrowded general hostels. Besides, due to space crunch many differently abled girls fail to get a seat in the hostels. To resolve the problem, college authorities had sent a proposal to state government in 2013 seeking funds for construction of a special hostel dedicated to disabled students. “Presently, at least 60 different-abled students are studying at our college and they will be immensely benefited by this special hostel,” said principal of the college, Sanjukta Mohapatra.
